The countdown is on, school holidays are fast approaching! With weeks of free time, as a parent your new challenge is keeping them entertained.
Aussie families love hitting the road and going on a big adventure with their kids during the school holidays. There’s plenty of time to make lasting memories and get away from your home city for a bit.
There are so many great holiday choices in Queensland, but when the world’s your oyster, sometimes it can be difficult to plan out an itinerary. Let us give you some ideas of the best Queensland holiday destinations – we’ve made the effort to add some classics and a few you may not have thought about yet.
Summer Bliss at Daydream Island
Access to clear ocean waters, stunning views, pools and the reef just a stone throw away! Daydream Island is a tropical mecca for your family holiday. It’s quiet enough to spend quality time with the kids, but has enough to do to tucker them out for bed. Checkout shark and stingray shows at the world’s largest open-air aquarium, catch a movie at the open-air cinema or go for a round of mini golf.
The island only re-opened to the public last year, so get in early and take advantage of the brand new $100 million facility redevelopment. There’s no time like the present to enjoy the sparkling new buildings and facilities.
After a quick ferry trip you’ll find yourself on one of the neighbouring Whitsunday Islands, or on the mainland town Airlie Beach. In this cluster of islands, there’s no end to what you can do.
Hit The Theme Parks
You can’t beat a holiday in our own backyard! A tour of the southern theme parks are always a hit with the kids. Satisfy the adrenaline junky in your family by taking them on one of the wild rides. Our favourite is still the Superman Escape and Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster at Movie World.
It’s also the perfect time to cool off at one of the water parks. No matter which park you choose, they each easily attach to their respective water park. It’s always safe to pack togs just in case.
Check Out Kuranda
All Aboard! Your kids are sure to feel like jungle explorers as they chug through the mountainous rainforest terrain. The scenic railroad cuts through towering trees, waterfalls and sloping mountains. For an even better look, jump on one of the skyrail carts. The view makes the towering trees below look miniature.
Kuranda is a charming rainforest village northwest of Cairns. It’s often overlooked for the more popular neighbouring city but has plenty to offer of its own. It’s bespeckled with artsy shops and boutique stores. It’s also surrounded by several national parks and animal sanctuaries, which includes the World Butterfly Sanctuary, which is sure to amaze the butterfly lover in your family.
Soar To The Qantas Founders Museum
Do you have an aviation expert in the making in your family? Then the Qantas Founders Museum is a must-see stop. Based in the rural town of Longreach it’s the perfect stop for an outback adventure. The small town was actually the birthplace of Qantas, and it lets visitors get up close to plenty of historical aircrafts.
Meet Some Roos At Cape Hillsborough National Park
This may be your best chance at saying G’day to a genuine wild wallaby! These friendly fellas are used to visitors and are known to hop on over to get a close look at you. If you’re holidaying in the Mackay region, this is a hugely popular destination – still it’s rarely congested, so you can enjoy the stunning beaches in peace.
We hope you’re an early riser though, the best time to go is at sunrise when the wallabies come to feed on the beach. While you’re there there’s plenty of nature to explore. It’s a prime spot to let your young adventurer run wild and discover the surrounding eucalypt forest which is scattered with tidal pools, volcanic rock clusters and plenty of native animals.
Have A Beachy Holiday At The Sunshine Coast
Sun, sand and a round of beach cricket – sounds like the perfect school holidays to us. Where better to relax than at Brisbane’s neighbour? The Sunshine Coast is often the quieter option between the coastal cities, which is great when you’re bringing the family. We think the best experience is hiring a beach-side hotel or Airbnb further north near Noosa Heads where the beaches tend to be quieter.
While you’re out enjoying the September break, make sure your pets are having the time of their lives as well. Unfortunately we can’t always bring our furry family members with us, but what we can do is make sure they’re having a holiday of their own. Instead of having a friend come over once a day to feed your pets, book them into the Samford Pet Resort. If you’re from Brisbane, Samford Pet Resort is the best place for your pet to stay while you take a break! We offer award-winning pet accommodation for cats, dogs, birds and rodents. Don’t let your pet feel like they’re missing out, drop them off with us so you both can have a holiday. Reach out to us today about booking in.
