The Labour Day long weekend is fast approaching, and it’s time to start making plans for your (well-deserved) time off. There are plenty of great activities close enough to Brisbane to be convenient, but far enough away to remove yourself from reminders of the daily grind.
Whether you’re keen to get out and active, align body and mind in a challenging new task, or relax and unwind doing something low-key, we’ve got a few suggestions to make your long weekend the best it can be.
Exploring Stradbroke Island
Oh, Straddie, you beautiful gem of an island! Grab the early ferry across to Stradbroke Island from Cleveland on Saturday morning and watch the sunrise over the water – you won’t regret it! You can choose to take your car or simply board the ferry as a foot passenger, as there are regular buses from the ferry terminal to Point Lookout. Once you hit the Island, take a stroll around North Gorge and drink in the fantastic scenery. Let your weekend drift away on the beach reading a good book or get out and explore the island and learn something new like surfing or bodyboarding. And don’t forget to hit up the Point Lookout markets on Sunday!
Camping at Binna Burra
Looking to get out in nature and wake up to birdsong and the swish of the trees over your head? Binna Burra, situated in Lamington National Park on the Gold Coast Hinterland, is your destination for the Labour Day long weekend! The campsite includes toilets, showers and laundry facilities for those who like their small luxuries. There are also BBQ’s so you can enjoy a good snag with your evening ghost stories! You’ll find plenty of amazing walks to keep you occupied during the day. Explore the rainforest, waterfalls and forest canyons. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to breathtaking views here! There are also plenty of activities to take part in such as guided bush walks, flying fox and abseiling.
Climbing the Glasshouse Mountains
Is it well and truly time to conquer Mount Tibrogargan? Many Brisbane fitness and climbing junkies view scrambling up Tibrogargan to be a rite of passage. It’s certainly a challenge (recommended for individuals with climbing experience), but one that will leave you with an astounding panorama of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, and a real sense of accomplishment! If scaling a vertical rock face doesn’t sound like your jam however, there are plenty of milder walks around the Glasshouse Mountains that provide excellent scenery.
The Mount Beerwah track is perfect for a casual stroll, followed by a leisurely picnic. If you’re looking for something a bit longer, try the Mount Ngungun summit walking track, taking you through two hours of open forest and woodlands. Relax afterwards in one of the charming towns within the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, such as Montville or Maleny. If the weather is fine, you could even go for a dip at Kondalilla Falls. If you plan to stay for the entire weekend, there are an abundance of unique and tranquil rainforest lodges spotted around the mountains. Try Secrets on the Lake near Maleny for something a little bit special.
