The Easter long weekend may be a fantastic opportunity to stuff your face with chocolate, but it’s also the perfect time to relax, unwind and spend quality time with family and friends.
If your family unit includes a doggo or two, you want to ensure that they can tag along for any events planned during your four blissful days off work. We’ve put together a little list of the best dog-friendly activities around Brisbane this Easter long weekend so that everyone can enjoy the festivities. However you decide to spend your long weekend, be sure to pack some treats for your furry friend because chocolate is highly toxic to dogs!
Good Friday: Grab a chocolatey cocktail
Did someone say Absolut Mini-Egg martini? There are plenty of dog-friendly bars around Brisbane; it’s just a matter of finding one that will whip up the most decadent Easter cocktail for you and your pals! The Burrow in West End, The Wickham in Fortitude Valley, Hope and Anchor in Paddington, Brewski in Petrie Terrace and Cribb Street Social in Milton are all pubs and bars that will welcome your furry friends with open arms while serving up drinks for the human crew. So bag a seat in the beer garden or at a table on the sidewalk with your pooch by your side and settle in for an evening of banter (for the people) and head scratches (for the dogs).
Easter Saturday: Hit up a farmers markets
After some fresh produce for your Easter luncheon? Davies Park Farmers Markets in West End is one of Brisbane’s best! Not only can you peruse stall upon stall of fresh fruit, veggies, flowers and bread, but as you reach the middle of the thoroughfare, you’re greeted with an array of food trucks offering tasty snacks, meals and treats. Grab a plate of paella or a refreshing juice and head for a shady spot under the giant fig trees lining the sports field. Your furry friend will be happy to burn some energy in between diligently sniffing out the best bargains, as there’s plenty of room for you to throw a ball or a frisbee too!
Easter Sunday: Enjoy hot cross buns in the park
New Farm Park is one of the most beautiful dog-friendly parks in Brisbane! Secure a spot under the trees and set up your picnic blanket. Whip out those mouth-wateringly fresh hot cross buns and share them about while you soak up the sun. Remember to pack a different kind of treat for your furry friends, however, as sultanas are toxic to their sensitive tummies! Once all snacks have been devoured, make tracks towards the off-leash, fenced area by the Powerhouse carpark for your pooch to run wild and socialise with other dogs.
Easter Monday: Host a pool party
So we know it’s meant to be autumn, but does it really ever get cold enough to resist a dip in the water in sunny Brisbane? If you or one of your mates has a pool, why not end the long weekend with a ripper of a party? We’re thinking snags on the BBQ, cold ones in the esky and a splash or two for the kids and dogs in the pool. No harm in stretching out summer for as long as possible! Plus, everyone is going to need a little exercise after all the chocolate consumed on Sunday. An enthusiastic game of water polo or backyard cricket should burn a few calories. Just watch out for ball-happy pooches keen to derail your scoring system!
